McGeoch's new range of rail lights

High tech LED lighting to brighten up the way rail travellers travel!

In today’s high energy cost market place, McGeoch and Angel have used their experience to develop a highly cost effective, environmentally friendly set of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights with very low through life costs. Adding style and aesthetic influences to a lighting system with LED technology is never straightforward. Attention to colour, glare, thermal management, longevity, electronic drive, EMC, IP all need to be considered carefully.

Angel has undertaken development work to provide a Class 153 fluorescent lighting replacement solution based upon LED technology. Although this technology is a commonplace offering in replacements for halogen down lights, indicator bulbs, illuminated signs, traffic lights, portable lighting etc, the use of it for mainstream interior illumination has not been achieved, until now.

The class 153 was chosen because of its large lighting ceiling ‘trough’ arrangement, single tube and full-coverage diffuser (all being recognised as good prototyping aspects).

Features

Approvals

During development (stage 1) Angel engaged Atkins for approvals and testing guidance to ensure all necessary railways and other applicable standards were achieved. 

Angel can provide a full approval pack, including Class 153 installation procedures and VMI task review within a core engineering change pack for its customers.

Energy & Other Specification Data

The Class 153 lighting solution offers significant energy saving over the current fluorescent solution³ is designed to run directly from the train’s (24V nominal) supply and has been specified to meet all railway groups and other identified applicable standards⁴.

¹ Design complies with AV/ST9001 requirements. ² Maintenance free service life is the operational lifetime before the light level falls to below 70% of its original design output and applies to non-emergency units only. Emergency equipped light units will require an in-situ battery change at 5 years but otherwise offer an identical maintenance free service life.³ Energy options are available which offer flexibility of light output against energy saving, from 2.5% to over 17%. ⁴ Railway Group and other applicable standards identified through industry consultation.

McGeoch LED Technology and Angel Trains combined forces to develop an Industry leading LED Luminaire, this project was approached from the ground up with an on-site visit to measure accurately the fluorescent light output, McGeoch then utilised its R+D centre to replicate the amount of light and the quality of light using LED Technology.
